  1. Start Proper Oral Hygiene Habits ASAP: Begin basic oral health habits with your child from as young as possible, which means as soon as the first baby tooth emerges at about 6 months of age, rubbing the new teeth with a small facial towel and along the gum line.

  2. Teach Your Children: As a parent or caregiver, it is crucial to provide your child with the necessary skills and knowledge for proper dental care. It is never too early to begin educating your child about the basics of oral care.

Parents should actively help with brushing their child's teeth daily until they can brush on their own. This is because the child may not have the manual dexterity required to brush effectively before 8 years of age.

Be sure to supervise their brushing until they can do it confidently on their own, which will guarantee effective results in maintaining good oral health throughout their lives.

  3. Prevent Cavities with Proper Diet and Hygiene Habits: Incorporating a healthy diet, abundant in nutrient-dense foods like fruits and vegetables as well as calcium-rich sources is crucial for building strong bones, teeth and gums. To ensure optimal oral health for your child, it's paramount to limit the consumption of sugary snacks and beverages that can contribute to tooth decay. Sugar consumption is okay, however, do limit said consumption to only during main meals. This is because saliva production is highest during these times, which aids in neutralizing the acids caused by sugary foods. On a side note, ensure the local water supply contains fluoride, which can help to prevent tooth decay. If the water supply is not fluoridated, consult your dentist on fluoride supplements that may be needed.

  4. Visit a Dentist or Orthodontic Clinic in Singapore: It is recommended that paediatric dental treatment should start at the age of 1, and regularly after that. Consistent check-ups will enable the dentist to keep track of your child's oral health status, identify any problems in advance and provide preventive care if necessary. Moreover, it can aid in the child becoming less sensitive and developing a positive attitude toward dental visits, thus eliminating their fear of dentists.

You should watch out for any indications of orthodontic problems like new teeth growing in the wrong direction, teeth that are crowded or misaligned, a poor bite, and anomalies with jaw development such as crossbite, underbite and overbite. As per the Association of American Orthodontists, it is advised to take your child for their first orthodontic consultation at age 7. If you notice any concerns, consult an orthodontist for an evaluation and consider early intervention if necessary.

  5. Limit Long Term Sucking Habits (such Pacifier, Thumb Sucking and Prolonged Bottle Feeding): As a parent, it is crucial to assist your child in breaking away from sucking habits such as pacifier use, thumb-sucking or prolonged bottle feeding before the age of three. While most children naturally stop using pacifiers between ages 2 and 4, if these behaviours continue beyond that period or become intense, they may enhance the risk of dental problems. Sustained pressure applied by sucking habits on developing teeth and jaws can lead to misalignment issues and affect proper jaw growth and positioning of teeth, resulting in open bites which are malocclusions where there's a gap between upper & lower front teeth when closed. These complications could turn out expensive and difficult to manage later on.

To ensure optimal outcomes throughout this transition stage, it's highly recommended to seek advice from an
Orthodontist specialist who will evaluate your child's situation accurately while providing personalized guidance specific to them.

Creating and maintaining good oral health practices is crucial for children to ensure healthy teeth and gums throughout adulthood. Parents can contribute significantly to their child's dental care by starting early, nurturing good brushing techniques, incorporating a healthy diet, scheduling regular dental check-ups, and guiding their children to break prolonged sucking habit. By following these tips, parents can help their children develop good oral hygiene practices, preventing costly dental procedures in the future. You can help ensure your child's oral health remains in optimal condition and set them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
